COULD RONALDO RETURN TO UNITED?

Cristiano Ronaldo could be set for an unexpected return to Manchester United, according to former teammate Louis Saha. Despite a controversial exit in 2023, Ronaldo would reportedly embrace the chance to return if offered, especially with the arrival of Ruben Amorim as a potential manager.

Ronaldo’s departure from Manchester United in January 2023 left a sour taste, as he publicly criticized then-manager Erik ten Hag and the club's facilities in a high-profile interview with Piers Morgan. These comments and his disciplinary issues led to his eventual departure, with Ronaldo joining Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. However, despite his exit on less-than-ideal terms, Ronaldo’s connection with the club’s fans and players has remained strong. According to Saha, the 39-year-old would jump at the opportunity to return to Old Trafford if the chance arises.

Saha believes the presence of fellow Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim could be crucial in facilitating Ronaldo's return. Amorim, who has gained recognition for his managerial skills, is reportedly someone with whom Ronaldo has a positive relationship. While Saha insists that Amorim wouldn’t sign Ronaldo just for personal reasons, he believes that if Amorim sees Ronaldo’s value on and off the pitch, he wouldn’t hesitate to bring him back. If an opportunity arises, Ronaldo would be eager to take on the challenge and help Manchester United, according to Saha.

Ronaldo’s first stint at United from 2003 to 2009 was hugely successful, but his second spell, which began in 2021, was marked by tension. Although he scored 24 goals in his first season, the subsequent campaign was marred by discipline issues, including his premature departure from a friendly against Rayo Vallecano. This fallout with management eventually led to Ronaldo's move to Al-Nassr in late 2022. Since then, he has continued to impress, scoring regularly in the Saudi Pro League.

While it seems unlikely that United would re-sign Ronaldo due to the nature of his departure, the prospect of him returning to the club, now under Amorim’s leadership, remains intriguing. Ronaldo’s passion for the club and the challenge of winning more trophies could motivate him to return, especially with the right environment and leadership in place.

It’s unclear whether Manchester United’s hierarchy would entertain the idea of bringing Ronaldo back, but according to Saha, the situation could change with Amorim’s arrival. If Ronaldo is given a chance to prove himself once again at Old Trafford, he could take it with both hands, knowing his previous exit was far from the ideal way to leave a club where he had once achieved legendary status.
