Paul Scholes: Cristiano Ronaldo is not the superior player
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes is of the opinion that Cristiano Ronaldo is not the superior player over Lionel Messi.
The Argentine superstar has come up against English clubs on several occasions and it is only against Manchester City that he has found back of the net. He has struggled to score against several English clubs like Chelsea and Manchester United. Despite this, he is widely acknowledged as the best player in the world. The only player who can probably challenge him at the moment is Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar currently holds the FIFA world Player of the Year title.
Messi will be hoping to reclaim the title after a 12 month absence by winning the Champions League. This trophy will be in addition to the Copa del Rey and la Liga titles that Barcelona have already secured for this campaign. The Spanish outfit take on Juventus in the final at Berlin. The 27-year-old has been extremely graceful during the season. Under Pep Guardiola, he used to be the main man at Barcelona. His importance in terms of attack may have diminished a little bit under the regime of Luis Enrique, but it is largely down to additions of players like Neymar and Luis Suarez. They have taken a lot of pressure away from Messi.
“I think about the great players with whom I have shared a pitch: Eric Cantona, Zinedine Zidane, Pirlo, Xavi, Cristiano Ronaldo – and the greatest of them all is Messi,” said the former United midfielder. This is an astonishing compliment from someone who was himself a great player.Zidane once stated that Scholes was the best midfielder – and probably the most complete – he had seen in his career. The Englishman has come up against Messi four times in his career and he has ended up being successful more often than not.
