English Press want Ronaldo Deported
Following Englands exit from the World Cup, sickening reports and headlines were out in force in the English press, with the most brutal of them calling for Ronaldo to be deported from the country, being branded the most hated man in England, and being told to F*** of back where he came from.
It is clearly easier for the press to blame a young and committed Portugal player - who scored the winning penalty - than to blame the tactical ineptness (and awful squad selection) of Sven Goran Eriksson, the frustrating petulance of Wayne Rooney, the anonymity of most of Englands midfield during the match, nor the three wasters who failed to score their penalties for England.
What next? Will Ronaldo also be blamed for the Iraq war and world famine?!
This sort of racist tirade is unwarranted and unwanted in modern football - when we should be celebrating the unity that Football can bring to the world.
It is just days since the English themselves lambasted the "Sour grapes" attitude of the Argentinians (Who started a brawl after crashing out of the World Cup), and every match the Italians play in is accompanied by a commentator mentioning that the player who knocked the Italians out in the last World Cup was instantly sacked from his Italian club - yet the English, with a reputaion for fair play, sportsmanship and playing with honour, have proved that they can sink as low as any other nation.
The English press need to tackle the real issues of why the greatest generation of players for fifty years didn't succeed this time around - and leave the sour grapes, the blame, and the hatred out of it.
